VC usually someone playing early in the round - captain and VC lock in so you can't trade them later in the round if you have to.
ie; people were VCing broncos because it was the first game and Haas happened to be playing the same game.

Its only if its the first game of the round.

If your captain plays first game, you know you'll be counting his score, whatever happens, so VC is irrelevant. So may as well put it on someone in the same game, as he'll be lockded out anyway
