Knights coach Adam O’Brien confirmed after Saturday’s game against Melbourne that Lachlan Fitzgibbon will return from a hamstring complaint. Kurt Mann suffered an ankle injury on the weekend but O’Brien said it was just a sprain and he should be fine for Thursday’s match.
The Broncos will likely be without Kotoni Staggs, who went down at training with hamstring injury on Sunday. Veteran Alex Glenn is expected to fill in for Staggs in the daunting task of marking up against in-form Newcastle gun Bradman Best. Boom rookie Tesi Niu could also be unleashed after starting his career as a bench utility. The other option is moving Corey Oates back to the wing and moving Xavier Coates or Herbie Farnworth to the centres. Issac Luke could also make his Brisbane debut after linking up with the club.
Winger Ken Maumalo started running on Wednesday after scans revealed his hamstring injury was not as bad as first thought and could be an outside chance of playing on Friday. David Fusitu’a could also bolster the Warriors’ stocks on the wing having spent the start of the revamped season in quarantine. Poasa Faamausili and Jack Murchie were both placed on report for grade-one dangerous contact last week but can escape suspension with early guilty pleas.
Dylan Edwards is expected to make his return from an ankle injury in place of Caleb Aekins. Meanwhile, Kurt Capewell will miss Friday’s game after sustaining a medial ligament injury although it is unclear how long he will spend on the sidelines. Liam Martin will likely come in to the starting side after impressing on the edge last week while Billy Burns should come on to the bench.
The Titans will be without Dale Copley after the centre limped off in the second half with an ankle injury. “It doesn’t look great short-term,” Justin Holbrook said after the game. Jai Arrow moved to the centres after Copley left the field. With Tyrone Roberts (ankle) nearing a return, Phillip Sami could shift back to the wing with Brian Kelly moved to the centres as one alternative to cover for Copley’s absence. Tyrone Peachey could also be a straight swap for Copley off the bench.
It’s unlikely Paul McGregor will make any changes after securing his first win of the season on Sunday - and Fox League expert Michael Ennis agrees he needs to stick with the seventeen men that took down Cronulla. In particular, he says Ben Hunt must be at dummy-half. “Today, after seeing him go into that dummy half role, the discussion is finished. It’s over, Ben Hunt is a dummy half,” Ennis told the Big League Wrap. Matt Dufty also put in a man-of-the-match effort at fullback, ending McGregor’s hunt to find a number one for now.
