Being serious, yes you should get a ban for saying that to a red, but haven't seen a trustworthy source (non-Fox/Telegraph) of what he actually did say, so might have to wait for ref's report to judiciary.

Here's fox sports saying the word cheat

Imagine if he dropped something a bit more off colour. Racist, sexist, homophobic etc etc, then he deserves everything he gets.

If you do say anything racist/homophobic you do, correctly, get a big ban, whether it's to a player or a ref (see Montoya earlier this season). I'm fairly relaxed about general sledging/insults, but that's a step beyond.

Also, I hope someone triple-checked that Webster definitely knows he has to move to Auckland for the role.

Yeah, if Fox - of all outlets - are couching it in "allegedly" then I'm not taking it as gospel yet. However the fact of him being referred straight to judiciary doesn't look good.

That’s what I’m saying. Surely calling a ref a cheat isn’t that bad. If a player called another player a cheat for claiming he got the ball down, and the video showed they didn’t, do they get binned?

Don’t get me wrong, being a ref is signing up for a hiding for nothing. But surely that doesn’t cross a line and enter into copping abuse in the workplace etc.

I think calling a ref a cheat is much worse than an opposition player. Opposition will push the boundaries and some will cheat/go a bit far to get a win for the team.

Refs are meant to be impartial and calling them a cheat is low.

From playing sport and reffing on the odd occasion I know id take being called a cheat tougher if I was reffing

Don't know if its the same in League but in football, as a general rule, anytime you call anyone a cheat it's a guaranteed card if not a send off. A lot of refs, particularly old school ones, do not take kindly to its use.

I once lost a grand final where we had two players sent off for using the word cheat (in reference to the other team) despite the fact that they were quite obviously cheating flower and the ref was too old to keep up.

Ref's are pretty soft if that's what was said. It's a position that requires a thick skin.

It's about questioning their integrity if you call them a cheat.

Hilariously Chris Sandow was once binned for saying to the ref "How much are they paying ya?"

3/117 C with 5 to come C Ipap, Moses, Penisini, Mahoney and Mam so I expect to lose ranks.

    Don’t think I’ll get Frizell.

A guy on my soccer team once got a red card and 4 week suspension for asking the ref "Does your arm point the other way"

In his defense, the referee was making some strange decisions that day, but the judiciary did not take a kind view of his words.

That's clearly not true in pro soccer, as any rudimentary lip-readers will know. Both codes of rugby have always taken a military respect for referee far more seriously than football.

TBH I think it's still true at all levels despite what the refs cop, you can talk shit to the ref as much or as little as they allow but as soon as you say the word cheat (and it is very word specific) you will get a reaction

Yeah, I'd say every weekend in the EPL there's player(s) behaviour toward the ref unpunished that would get you a long ban in either rugby.

I have no idea what happens with Cheese tho - I think it should be a fine (based on the lenient punishments almost everything else gets) but it's probably a suspension because refs are understandably on a pedestal.
