I don't think it's specifically aimed at people bringing their weight down upon another player, but rather dropping their weight in order to bring down another player. Usually the injuries occur when the weigh is indeed brought down upon another player, which is why they don't want people dropping their weight (via lifting the legs and leading down with the hips) in general.

I guess it's similar to how a shoulder charge doesn't always cause injury, but it can cause serious injury in certain circumstances, and so they outlaw the shoulder charge all together.

If this is the case then I guess it makes sense

2 week suspension for Preston would be interesting (what Niukore and Okunbur got)

I guess you still have to hold given money to make

filthridden wrote:The issue with the hip drop is the player leaves the ground and is no longer in control of their bodyweight thus putting the ball carrier in the firing line for lower limb injury.

Whether he was going for a strip or not, he has left the ground, wasn't in control of his bodyweight which then landed on the player's lower limbs causing injury.

That's incorrect. The hip drop is intentional dropping to complete the tackle. Just like the crusher is intentionally dropping on to the neck. The refs penalise accidental crushers, and I hope they use discretion moving forward re: intent in regards to hip drops.

Outcome for a player should have no impact on the decision

Rabbitohs have had all the attack. I'd say it's expected.

He's an absolute hold no doubt. Everyone is in the same boat.

With how he's been going he may well be a hold all season.

A bit like saying a high tackle is not a high tackle because you didnt mean it.

    Onus is on the defender.

Also I never seen a hip drop follow an unsuccessful strip which I think contributed massively to what happened, yet it’s a classic hip drop?

That's the argument. Uses their own bodyweight to apply pressure to an opponents leg etc. I'd say he didn't do that on purpose. Will be interesting how it plays out.
