I think what's happened is he captained someone else, saw VC Hunt's 98, and then traded out Thurston or whoever for a DNP. The sneaky fucker.

I didn't remember being able to trade captains but I never tried being new to the game back then.

This was way back when the captains loop was a thing. Won me a weekly. A score of 1143 these days in a good round would probably be only good for a round rank of 500 or thereabouts.

We say it sucks for fantasy with so many injuries but is there something to be said for the way the game is played for so many injuries to occur?

Could be something to do with the way strength and conditioning done at the moment and training loads? Seems to be a lot of training injuries this year; a lot of soft tissue stuff.
I would also argue that the glut of injuries makes the fantasy game more interesting and challenging.

Likely also knowing more about sports science. A few seasons ago Hynes probably plays with a tight calf.
