Remember the dark old days when we used to get drip fed a couple of rounds at a time a few weeks in advance? Well I was trying to explain that to an AFL supporter a few weeks ago.

It was as recent as 2012 if anyone can confirm?

Only Thursday and Friday games for the Eels, and all pretty easy really, should challenge for top 4 if we can win a few in the next couple of weeks.

In an effort to give sides making the 8 the longest possible break, I'm OK with that. Worth noting the QlD sides play the Thursday so they get the biggest possible advantage going into the finals.

Not really. Broncos will be playing Friday night in the finals, so that's 8 days. Teams which play Friday then have a Sunday final will have 9 days. Plus the Broncos have to travel home, and the Cowboys probably have the longest trip of all teams in the first week of the finals.

Thanks NRL for the 5 Thursday Night, and 7 Friday night games this season. Really happy to have a family passes and a 360km round trip to have to make that trip on school nights for yet another year. How about some Saturday games next year hey?

Would you rather have a side that cant sign the Jack Birds, Milfords, Gilletts and James Roberts' and co and have Saturday/sunday arvo games most weeks that no one can watch for free, or a side that is financially very successful and has near unlimited TPA opportunities to keep the team near the top of the ladder each year and have 4 or 5 genuine superstars in the side?

Broncos get huge coverage up here even if we're not talking about the game. Newspapers, news reports, radio etc. I reckon we'd be able to have the same TPA opportunities because there is no other sporting organisation to rival their popularity in Brisbane. I guess the real question is whether the other 15 clubs would be prepared to have a lower salary cap if they got smaller NRL grants as a result of the Broncos not playing FTA as much.

But to answer your question, if they hypothetically are linked, I'd be happy to have a superstar or two less if it mean't we had a draw that was more member friendly. I'm sure plenty of other fans would say otherwise. My preference is for my own selfish reason. When I became a member in 2009, I wasn't expecting 9 seasons later that I'd have less then 10 weekend games.

Back in 2009, to the best of my memory, all the games were played on the weekend (Sat and Sun), except for ONE game on Fri night. There were no weekly games on Thurs or Mon nights.

So back then, in most weeks, 7 of 8 games (87.5%) were played on Sat/Sun, whereas it's been reduced to 5 of 8 (62.5%) now.

They had MNF (been around for about 15 years), though your stats did make me check, and I was wrong in the number of weekend games there were. The actual figures by year are:
    2009 - 3
    2010 - 4
    2011 - 5
    2012 - 1
    2013 - 1
    2014 - 3
    2015 - 2
    2016 - 0
    2017 - 0

That's 7 in the last 6 seasons, and 19 in the last 9. I assume 2012 is when they started 2 FRF games.

Is this for reals? Or is it an old wives tale that's become an urban myth.
Yes, it revolves around what FTA are willing to pay for the product and that is derived by ratings and number of viewers which in turn dictates how much they can sell advertising slots for. But the assumptions it's built on is that rating in QLD would have to be substantially higher for FTA Broncos games, so much so that Nine could charge advertisers a premium. It also assumes that the viewership in NSW is not effected or less by an equal margin for Broncos games otherwise it cancels each other out. Are Queensland fans that fickle they wouldn't watch the Storm, Titans and Cowboys on a regular basis ? It just seems like one of those "stats" that when you start digging may not be what it seems. You would never get the detail required to put it to rest but it would be interesting to see how it really stacks up.

I just checked myself. I was wrong about when MNF started, but so were you. MNF and the second Fri night game started in 2007 (the year the Titans came in).

So, in 2006, 6 of the 7 games were played on Sat/Sun. Given that the second Fri night game was brought in for the benefit of QLD tv viewers, and that you had 2007 and 2008 to observe the scheduling, I'm surprised that you didn't realise what you were getting yourself in for when you bought your season tickets in 2009.

It sounds like you are like the majority of league fans who don't want to see the Broncos playing on Thurs and Fri nights on most weeks. Do you have a solution Dip?

Not really, though having the NRL have scheduling rights as opposed to channel 9 should be an improvement. You'd think each team should then have roughly the same number of games in each time slot. That could be wishful thinking though. I knew we'd have a lot of Friday night games, and I can live with that. 2 seasons without a home game in the weekend slots when roughly 62.5% of games are at that time is clearly a statistical outlier though.

Who knows, and I suspect you're right. However since I was replying to a statement that we have all our stars due to the number of FTA games we get (which I stated I don't really agree with), then if that statement is correct, it is reasonable to assume the game's revenue revolves around FTA, and other teams are better off as a result of it.

The one thing for sure is that Channel 9 won't be scheduling games with the Broncos every Friday night to make less money. I don't know how much that extra money really is, though I wouldn't be surprised if Channel 9 was prepared to bastardise the integrity of a competition for a relatively low % increase in revenue for them.

i have hated dealing with being on 9 in the past due to always being the unfavorable time slots to attend, i want sunday 2pm and saturday 3pm & 5:30 home games

i really thought, given we are the ugliest, worst team to watch in the league we'd be a chance for a few of them in the last 6 rounds but have somehow given us 5 of the last 6 on 9 lol, talking about giving a gift to other codes and driving people away from watching our game lol

3 Thursdays in a row, they'll be ratings hits, i am sure

      Current date/time is Sun Nov 24, 2024 2:01 pm
