    Hi all.

I am currently looking for a few extra players for our draft competition which is run through the nearlysport.com website. Our comp is social, with a lot of banter and good competition.

For those that haven't used it, I have used several fantasy platforms for nrl and I have found this to be by far the most enjoyable. I would be more than happy to explain it to anyone.

If anyone is interested, please send me a message or let me know on here.

    Cheers.

Nearly Sport runs recruitment via either draft or an auction process.

Scoring is completely different to Fantasy/Supercoach.
Tries are worth 4 points, and Forwards get from 0-8 points a week based on their workload.
Similar to the old VNRL if you every played that, and nrlceo runs a similar scoring system as well.

I am a big fan, and care more about my nearlysport.com teams than fantasy or ultimate.

This is the first year they've done double price for initial bidding, makes it tough as you can't get any real cheapies.

Don't go too ambitious - can't spend all your cap in first round so make sure you leave room to recruit in round 2. There will be plenty of talent available in round 2, so try and find a few guys you might be able to get for cheaper ($500k and under)

Don't just bid the minimum in initial bidding. I won several bids by just adding $2k and outbidding people who had the minimum price there.

If you are using player goalkickers, try and get at least 1 player not listed as a kicker who will kick some goals, there are a couple out there.

If you are used to Fantasy/supercoach and not really played this type of game before, for outside backs, try scoring is pretty much all that matters. Slapsy sideways TB running means nothing in this game

Are you playing player or club goalkickers?

Cam Smith is a good player in this format, but he is not as dominant as he is in Fantasy, so no need.

My personal strategy is to put my biggest bid on a gun forwards, big minute middle forwards are the best bet in this form of scoring (guy who make both tackles and run metres) - JTrbo, McGuire, Brown, Graham. Target one or 2 of them.
You do need a good hooker, so if you don't go Smith make sure you have a decent bid on one of the other hookers (good hookers are the same as in fantasy)

For kickers I generally try and snag one cheap - as long as they meet the following criteria.
    a) will always be picked for their club if fit
    b) will always goalkick for their club if picked

There is certainly something to be said for ensuring a premium kicker like Smith though so spending $1mil+ on him not necessarily a bad idea.

The value picks are basically the mid rangers people are talking about on fantasy - Cook, Murray, Lichaa, Tohu I think might all be gotten cheaper.

Part of the joy of bidding is working out the psychology of who you are playing with - if they are all Fantasy players they might bid on players they have/want in their fantasy team, so they might all be trying to get the same players for cheap

yep we are playing with a kicker, and just had a look at the kickers list its real short so like you said ill look into those not yet capped with the kicker tag... cheers for the advice...one last question...having a look at the scoring is it better to get forwards that tackle over ones those pose attacking abilities? ignore just read your post again... (guy who make both tackles and run metres). target dual backrow/frontrow to use in frontrow?

Forward scoring is split into to

1, 2 or 4 points for "Defensive Forward" (making tackles and not missing them)
1, 2 or 4 points for "Attacking forward" (mostly run metres, with bonus points for offloads/tackle busts)

The best forwards are ones who can make a lot of tackles and run metres eg Josh Mcguire got 73 attacking points and 48 defensive points

Some run a lot without making tackles. eg Junior Paulo who got 63 attacking points and only 1 defensive point last year
Some tackle a lot without running eg Cameron McInnes who got 92 defensive points and only 1 attacking point.

They are all useful, obviously the guys who do both are better, but they are priced accordingly and its hard to get too many of them in your team. Once you are past the top tier guns, its better to get someone that runs for 200m a game and makes 0 tackles, than someone who is half decent at both.

You can see last years stats on the site to work out who you want.

The PP voting is a Dally-M like popularity contest that favours the well-known players - gets a lot of criticism, but the points allocated are small enough that I don't focus on it too much.

any idea who to pick out of

    Gordon
    Holmes
    Arey
    t Lolo
    Latrell
    gutherson

as my kicker, they are the ones left. Gordon, ARey and TuiLolo are scheduled kickers....i believe Holmes will and but latrell may not be first selectio. Guth is hurt so not to sure if he is worth getting.

    i currently have

    FB: Teddy
    Wing: Rapana
    Centre: Hayne, Aitken
    Hlf/ 5/8: CWalker

have bid on RossDogg as final wing slot along with milne as backup.

I would go ARey out of those.

Some of them might not kick, and looks like you need a halfback too. ARey will kick if he can stay fit.

I think Gutherson will kick over Moses when he comes back from injury, but is a bit of a risk of not doing so.

cheers mate, best of luck in your leagues....hope you managed to fill them. also i get what ya mean-Part of the joy of bidding is working out the psychology of who you are playing with. has been fun so far seeing who i land and how much i missed out on someone else.

also cause im new to this style of play......do you leave yourself some $$$$ and how deep dose your squad go

Depth, you always want as many good players as possible - factors depends on how strong my 17 is, how good the players in the free agent pool are, how much money I have available.
I wouldn't fill my squad to 25 just for the sake of it, but I wouldn't leave good players available just to save $$ for potential future purchases.

Not sure if you aware, but once you buy a player, you get a 2 day cooling off period, but after that you can't cut them for 2 weeks. So if you have a full cap now, you won't be able to cut anyone next Tuesday to free up space for any TLT surprises. So if you think you might want to but someone after seeing team lists, keep a bit of cash free.

    I have 2 private comps - 1 silent bidding and 1 draft.

Bidding comp was this week and I ended up with this team. Missed out on my big gun forward in 1st round bidding, and had to settle for Papalii in round 2, but overall its pretty strong (14 team comp, good depth is hard to achieve)

    Tedesco
    Nofoaluma
    Croker
    Kenny-Dowall
    Winterstein
    Milford
    Townsend
    Whitehead
    Murray
    Fitzgibbon
    Papalii
    Koroisau
    Woods

    Brailey
    Twal
    Aubusson
    Gavin Cooper

DWZ, Liu, Copley, Brooks, Marsters and Doueihi as depth. Have $200k left which I am undecided on trying to spend now on more depth or wait for TLT

Still have 1 space in my draft comp this Sunday if anyone wants a go.

      Current date/time is Fri Nov 22, 2024 12:31 pm
