Moving Morgan to fb is terrible. Not only is he the perfect foil for JT at 6 when he was playing 1 he was forever getting caught out of position. I think Carney is only there as injury cover.StormTrooper96 wrote:
This one intrigues me. If Carney comes in what do they do with Morgan?
1. Coote gets an early release and Morgo goes to FB
2. Morgo goes into CTR for Hampton
3. Carney comes in as a 3rd Half 2nd Hooker option off the bench?

It's caught me a bit by surprise but getting the balance of cash vs points is hard. With 4 less "free" cash generating spots its made the points vs $s a harder trade off. I think its being hidden with lots of cows having overperformed this season with guns being a bit down (Kikau avg:47 vs Smith avg: 52).
This year I have to roll with what I've got but have found my cash isn't focused on my top 17 enough and the team needs to be flexible. For next year:
- 3 Cheap CTRs is here to stay for me. Gun money is wasted here IMO but depth is good to play matchups/form.
- Focus on cows in my 18-21. Extra money in the 18-21 is leaving points on the field.
- Depth is overrated......... Some cows always seem to pull well above their weight. Don't be too afraid to have a few more cows start the year.
- Try to get at least 1 gun at every position but don't stack positions too heavily. This year I had Smith, Cook and Macca as well as TTurbo, Ponga and Tedesco. Macca I bought in at rd 3 but the rest were starters. In hindsight my team would have been better served/flexible with Turbo or Tedesco being DCE, SJ or even Cleary. I've missed the Thompson, Mbye or any future value in these positions as I've locked it in too early. Not enough positions to lock stuff so early.
- Don't put depth in my gun positions (unless its super good value). Have a max of 1 questionable starter in each position (1-13 except centres). i.e. Croft, Cartwright and Croker needed more depth/strength as my starting halves. Katoa was not needed to backup TTurbo, Tedesco and Ponga.....
- Value rules all. Try to pick guys with value before locking in guys I like/guns.
Good post, but I have a few differences in my strategy this year.
For me, guns are always the toughest part of a team to fill. It's rare that a gun ever goes up another notch, so we're sort hoping that they just remain stable. But even with just the ordinary course of volatility, it's likely that they're going to drop in price at some point in the year and offer a better opportunity to buy them than by starting with them. So I only start with a few guns that I think will be most consistent with the view to upgrading to them during the year.
I think you're last point about Value ruling all is most pertinent. This year, guys like Cook and Ponga (mid pricers who turn into guns) seem as common as guns who are consistent and retain their gun status. Guys like SST and Croft haven't worked out, but on aggregate targeting guys with upside rather than going guns early has worked really well.
I don't worry at all about balance in my side early in the year. So much changes and we make so many trades during the year that it doesn't bother me which positions are scoring early. Given I only target a few guns, I want the most consistent ones. That tends to be the forwards. Volatility from guns is bad (can lead to big price falls, but unlikely to get big price rises), but volatility from cheapies can be beneficial (even if they're not consistently good, you can get great price rises even off a few good scores).
Given the flexibility of the interchange, I think it's even less important to target balance across the whole field.

Munster would be the obvious choice.
But even without Munster, if Smith is genuinely too injured to kick goals, they'll find someone.
Didn't they say last week that he was only another week away from goal kicking? He seemed to kick a fair bit in play and no news of him pulling up sore. All signs are good so far, just up to the godfather himself to pull it in.

180/4 so far. mmmmm
Only have Fifi and Konga tonight. Having this strange feeling in my gut that they might make or break my score this week.

Yes, he did so much of everything last week, I'd expect him to goal kick as well tonight. its just more the logic of Stimson's appearance somehow dictates whether or not he kicks that I felt I had to comment on

I genuinely have mo idea. Strongest opinion from me is that Hampton looks a different man this year. Hope he sticks.

Not sure if Su'a is the plan going forward. Will keep a careful eye on him this week and see what happens.

i don’t see an issue with assuming the 2 players who have kicked goals when smith hasn’t, ain’t in the starting team pointing towards Smith goalkickingMilchcow wrote:

But they've only kicked because Smith can't. It's not like they're kicking over Smith on merit. Having them dropped won't suddenly uninjure Smith.
Unless you think they were only in the team for their ability to cover Smith as goal-kicker.

Smith did plenty of kicking last week including the line drop outs. I’m not certain we were given all the information as to why he wasn’t goal kicking.

Croft has been dropped cause Smith can kick goals now.
Is that even a legit theory?

The altitude at Mt. Smart is not friendly to left-footed goal kickers is my assumption.
