I reckon the Broncos would have the record for most individual charges in a season this year, we seem to have someone charged every week.
I reckon that this is just typical of what the NRL and Referees tend to do with most new rule decisions that are brought in, time after time, year after year.
Do we all remember that when a player puts up a bomb and the defending player goes up for it, and the attacking player charges in and whips the players legs while he's up in the air and he falls back down (dangerously) to the ground. We saw a number of these regularly, and rightly so, a rule was brought in that you cannot tackle a defending player in the air.
Yes, great rule, but what the referees then did was even if an attacking player touched the defender with his pinky nail, a penalty was given. They took a good rule and really overdid it to where there was NO common sense applied to that rule and just penalised even the ridiculous touches.
So now I'm not surprised that again a new rule was brought in (again rightly so ) that when a defender has the attacking player in that vulnerable position with his neck, (and from a standing position, drops his whole body weight on to the defenders neck) which is so dangerous, that will be a serious charge to wipe it out of the game.
So AGAIN, all the officials and match review committee are really overdoing it and penalizing every single instance of the neck being bent with NO common sense applied to what the defender could have done to avoid it.
