I think it was pretty well-documented in the preseason that Cleary's 2020 average was probably somewhat sustainable (72.6).

However, I don't think even the most ardent Cleary fantasy fan would predict him to average nearly 20 points above that at 91 after the first 4 rounds - the owners have certainly been lucky in that regard, so there's no real need to be THAT guy...

So you were expecting him to score 72.6 in each of the rounds he has has played?

I would say most expected a slight 2-4 point regression if anything, but paid the money for a safe captaincy. And like you said, don't think anybody could have called a 91 average... that's wild

I picked him as a safe captaincy option because McInnes (particularly) and Haas were out. I expected him to be around where he was last year. 91 is right out of the box and I don't think either the people who picked him or the people who didn't expected anywhere near that.

The best indicator of what happens in the future is what happened in the past so I don't think anyone should be gloating about picking Cleary, it wasn't a genius move.

I think the point was that there was a fair chance he could average either side of 70 across this season.

I remember trying to manipulate his average from last year by removing games where he scored tries or had other outlier high-fantasy scoring games, and the best I could manage was to get his average down to around 60. If he's down in one area, he just picks points up in another.

But like Rapture said, his scoring so far this year is wild and beyond any level of expectation (especially considering no tries)

Granted I have him and no way I play him this week but I'm not prepared to call him a dud yet.

I am judging him on his actual performance rather than his score. Played ok and tried hard in Round 1, shit / mia in Round 2, Round 3 was a conceded pass for effort but questionable performance.

Not confident to play him in my 17 but not quite ready to toss him either. Hence he gets another week or two. Maybe. Feck, who knows.

i see Mitch Kenny didn’t get charged for his ‘crusher’ tackle. Makes even a bigger mockery of the video ref going back five tackles to penalise and put him on report.

I picked Cleary after researching that his scores last season were sustainable on the back of increased base rather than increased attacking stats. I expected most scores in the 60s, the occasional 70 and then attacking stats to bring 80/90/100s to boost his average.

I could never have dreamed he would be averaging 90 with an average of 1 TA per game and zero tries on the year. Will require a deep dive to see exactly why his scoring is so high, but on the surface he looks to be running the ball more so is seeing an uptick in RM, TB and offloads. Throw in 3 forced turnovers in round 1 and here we are

I'm pretty sure if we searched through rabbits post history, we'd see plenty of preseason posts talking about running without Cleary.

You will also find zero posts from anyone assuming Cleary will average 80+

Most who started with him did so as the only 70+ average from 2020 fit to start the season, not on the expectations of a big boost in scoring.

Anything else is rewriting history with the benefit of hindsight

Thoughts on shifting Liddle out for SOS (keeping an eye on Walker for next week), or Avo out for Walker now (potentially skipping on SOS altogether).

Sorry that it came across that way I didn’t intend on that. Reading it back I probs was a bit blunt didn’t mean it.

    Agree with what you’re saying.

Just with their being no clear cut captaincy option besides him to start the year for mine it was always gonna be a big gamble to not start with him if you opted that way. Penrith were always gonna be a top 4 team this year scoring lots of points as well. The very safe play was go to go with the crowd.

Even if he was gonna avg 68-70 I still think it was best to start with him! He was my first player picked.

A mate said to me this week what about putting the C on Macca I said not a chance I’m not playing captain roulette this year I took it off Haas 3 times last year and it cost me.
