Re: The Betting Thread
Placing a bet will be more expensive for South Australians than anyone else in the country when a new state government tax is introduced, online agency Sportsbet says.
The agency has reached out to local punters by email, urging them to oppose the tax of 15 per cent on the net wagering revenue of all betting companies offering services in the state.
The tax, which applies from mid-2017, will mean worse odds, fewer promotions and less money for SA punters, Sportsbet says.
"We need your help to send a strong message to your local MP, that an addition tax that punishes South Australian punters is not acceptable," it added.
The tax will be the first in Australia to be based on where bets are placed, rather than where a betting agency is based.
It will apply to bets on horses, harness and greyhound racing, and sports like the AFL, cricket and soccer.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis argues it's only fair betting agencies pay taxes wherever they are making money, "not in whichever jurisdiction their head officer and servers happen to be located".
The tax is expected to raise $9.2 million a year for the government.
Some $500,000 each year will be paid onto a rehabilitation fund for gamblers.

I like it. Why should the NT get all the tax revenue when they do nothing to put on the sports people are betting on, not to mention their head in the sand approach to bookies screwing over punters.

True about the NT, but unless all states are onboard and at the same tax rate people will use proxys

Proxys only work on a very small scale with bookmakers as they are obliged to make sure they match your home address as well. I tried using them to bet on the cricket in play and it doesn't work for long.No Worries wrote:True about the NT, but unless all states are onboard and at the same tax rate people will use proxys

That leaves the Canes. Finalists last year but a team that has lost 2 key players in Smith and Nonu. While they are still coming to terms with filling that mid-filed gap they have actually looked really solid all over the park. Front row is the best in NZ (form wise), tight 5 is solid, and the loosies are excellent. They have fantastic players at the key positions of 8,9, and 10 (all All Blacks) and pretty solid backs. By no means a sure thing but with odds available as much as $10 I reckon that is good value. Anything over $8 is pretty good I reckon!!
Big Money on the ride tonight. Games starts in 10 min. $200 on Canes at $10 (and an extra $200 @ $8 a week or so after this post) so stand to win $3600 IF the Canes lift the trophy. Sadly the weather is rubbish so the spectacle might not be great. Coles is back for the Canes though - an official late inclusion! Fingers Crossed!! Hope a few other people took the tip as well!

I have another bet which I reckon is very good value and one that in all likelihood would need to get on sooner rather than later. That is Fiji to win gold at Rio in the sevens. While perennial favourites NZ's campaign has been thrown in turmoil with multiple injuries, the recent withdrawal of star player Ardie Savea, the majority of the All Black XVs players turning down the opportunity to play, and the NZRU managing the whole thing in an extremely confusing way, the Fijians have brought in 5 star XVs players from Europe to play the next series: Leone Nakarawa, Waisea Nayacalevu, Josua Tuisova, Samisoni Viriviri and Semi Kunatani will all likely play in Paris in mid May.
Heaps of teams can win any given tournament so by no means is this a sure bet but odds of $3.75 (perhaps more on other bookies) for mine is very appealing. Fiji has won 3 of 8 tournaments this year, and is always a contender. Adding in the mix some of these star players (hugely excited to see Nakarawa play) I reckon they are more like an even money or 2:1 shot. The one thing that would concern me with this bet is the possibility of NZ bringing in late players which the NZRU haven't ruled out.
I'm gonna get on them, but will search out better odds. $4 would be fantastic.
Another good payday! So happy for the Fijians too! First ever Olympic Medal and its a gold in their National Sport! Chu boys, thanks for the $

Get on Opelka in the tennis this morning if it is not to late, he is up and coming playing against a clay courter on the ATP so is about $2.40
Also, Cowboys to win there Nfl preseason game today at $3 is a good value bet. Falcons v Dolphins will go 'overs' today to i am sure.
