Graham Annesley has defended the challenge, saying it was OK because the referee blew his whistle to tell the players time had expired.
So technically, the cowboys challenged the fact that the referee had indicated 80 minutes had expired. Because it was the end of the game, the "structured restart" part of the rule is OK to ignore.
If it wasn't the end of the game, and the Tigers were able to get a play the ball in, it would have been unchallengeable.
I hope Annesley has convinced himself it was the right call, because I don't think he convinced any of the fans.
I don't believe any mention was made of the fact more than 10 seconds elapsed before the challenge was made (especially relevant if you go back a few weeks ago when Tedesco clearly wanted to challenge a call but was unable to because he technically didn't request it in time)
Also, in any game where the margin is less than 6, the losing team (if they have a challenge available) is able to challenge the last play, and just hope that something went wrong. I hope other teams take advantage of this.
