If you find yourself on Majorca - I found Cala sa nau a pretty cool little beach. Walk around the rocks to the right of the beach and jump into the water from there.
Only other area I know a little of is Dordogne in France, just North of Bordeaux - lots of amazing villages around that area if you make it that far North.
Heard nothing but good things about San Sebastian and Perpignan but haven't been myself.

What are you after on your trip? Scenery, culture, food/drink, architecture, beaches, nightlife? If you say all of the above - what are your top three?

    More good stuff.

Travelling solo. Mostly culture. Talk to locals. Fit in a couple of beach days. Drinks, and some nightlife. Will look for some walking tour type stuff. Too old now to sleep in shared dorms but will look for private rooms in 'social' type spots.

my tv broke wrote:As this thread is a ghost train, I'm going to derail it:

Got a trip booked for October. Trip starts with four nights in Barcelona (second visit here), and ends with four nights in Lisbon. I have 9 nights in between that I'm not (yet) sure how to fill, but a couple of them will be in London to catch up with a friend.

Anyone got any locals only tips/suggestions in that area of the world for the other 5 or 6 nights ? Hoping to get a little away from the very tourist centric spots.

Without any solid plan I am open to just completely winging it.

Like someone said, trains in Europe are an awesome way to get around and drop into a wide variety of cultures.

We did a trip a few years back flying in to Lisbon -> flew to Seville (no real train options at that time) -> drove around Andalucia - especially loved Granada (has the Alhambra which is amazing) and Cordoba. While we were there a local recommended going down to Cadiz on the coast (was their favourite - but we never made it that far).
Drove to Madrid, which was okay as a big city (awesome Gallery if you're into the fine arts) then trained to Barcelona (our second visit too - love it) and fast train up to Paris (can get pretty much anywhere from there).

Spain's such a great country for food - We did a couple of food tours in Barca and Seville (just run by a local) - meet randoms from all over the world and get a wide range of awesome meals that you'd probably not really stumble on to as a tourist. Hadn't done that sort of thing before, but really enjoyed it.

"Riviera Bar Crawl & Tours" - did a couple of walking tours with them in Nice/Monaco and rated the experience. Don't expect amazing beaches in that part of the world though.
Anywhere in Southern France is going to have incredible cheeses and wine and will be crazy cheap for what we'd consider gourmet here.

Go to a game at Camp Nou if you haven't before and get the chance.
Get the train from Barca out to Montserrat and hike around up in that area.
Spend some time on Montjuic and swim in the pool there. Try convince security to let you jump off the 10m diving board.

In more helpful tips, I've been to Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon from that area of the world and I'd happily go to any of them again.
Mrs Cow and I both have heaps of long service leave, so we're looking at taking 2 months off to travel the Mediterranean, although probably not until 2024.

Tapas crawl around Barca is a great night

When we were there random place we went to was https://rosanegrarestaurantes.com/bcn-laietana/ (think this is the place) It was near where we were staying and we just happened to be nearby every day for their mojito happy hour.
This was back in 2006 though, I make no claims as to if they are still good, or even if its the same venue (but its about the same place and photos look familiar)

Speaking of food tours. Cow family heading to Orange in the school holidays. Less exotic than Barcelona, but any good recommendations for places we need to check out.

In Barcelona, head to speed chupidos (or similar). Shots bar. 1$ each.

Don’t order the monika Lewinsky for yourself (probably not for your partner either).

Running of the bulls followed by a few nights in a San Sebastián was unreal.

    Paris is overrated.

Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, slovina and Slovakia are all underrated

In Spain, only been San Sebastian - drove over from Bordeaux for 3-4 day stopover, which was the only time we went off train. Also stopped halfway at Bilbao to see MOMA, because I'm high culture like that

Every second place in San Seb seems to be a Pintxos bar (their regional tapas) and it's all delicious. And this was ten years ago but beer was cheaper than Coca Cola at the time. And everything was about 1/2 to 1/4 the price of stuff in France despite having the same currency and currency value.

Have spent a lot more time in France - mainly Paris but also Bordeaux, Normandy, Breton and various day trips to other towns

My wife is much more travelled - pretty sure she spent 10 days around Barcelona, and has literally spent months around France if that's an option for you. Could ask her opinion later.

I found in Barcelona especially they were very liberal with pours. I was regularly ordering whiskey's neat and they would pour 3 or 4 shots worth of whiskey in a glass.

I remember we stopped in at a random pub for an afternoon drink mid exploring the city, and I ordered a Jameson neat. Girl filled the glass full. 6 euro and i was set for hours.

Agree, altho I spent a couple of nights with a girl I met who had an apartment that overlooked the Eiffel tower. It was surreal. And a bit of a story.

Absolutely loved Croatia. We stayed in a tiny town about an hour north of Dubrovnik called Slano.

Also didn't like Paris but the Catacombs were awesome and Starry Night is the one famous painting that looks so much more incredible in person.

Found a couple of places on Majorca where they poured wine in a similar manner, pouring half the bottle into a glass.

main bit of advice would be to stick to one region with only a week to play with. I agree the Basque region is cool - you could start in Bilbao and check out San Sebastian, Biarritz, or Bayonne, end up at Bordeaux for a quick flight to London and then down to Lisbon. Or push a bit further north and go to La Rochelle. Or head north from Barcelona and check out Perpignan, Carcassone, Avignon, or Aix-en-Provence, before flying out of Marseille.

there is (was?) an apple cider place just outside of Orange (Small Acres?) which did a great tasting - was good because the kids can join in with the non-alcholic stuff.

If Latrell is named and I have 18 players then he's going in the loop with a groin strain.
