The 2023 NRL season will be the earliest kick-off in 22-years, lasting 31 weeks and in a major shock for fans, every club will have three byes.

In a massive win for fans, the regular season will be run over 27 rounds with four weeks of finals.

Thursday night March 2 next year - one week earlier than the kick-off date of this current season - is the opening round launch date that every club has been told to prepare for.

Pre-season matches are poised to formally begin on the weekend of February 10-12 with staging of the NRL’s Indigenous and Maori All Stars clash in Rotorua, on top of every club’s first official trial matches.

The annual Charity Shield between South Sydney and St George-Illawarra, as well as a second weekend of club trial matches, is being slated by the NRL for February 17-19.

Every club will be given a weekend off from footy on February 24-26 in order to rest before the season-proper commences on March 2. (DT)

Any details of how the draw will work?

27 rounds, 3 byes each… 15 rounds with 8 games, 12 with 7 is the “flattest” structure you can do. But I imagine it be bye heavy around Origin - so mainly 8 game rounds but some 4/5/6 game rounds during rep footy

I think we’re going to need 25 player squads or playing with less than 17 regularly will be a game feature

Forgot to add this bit: State of Origin will be played across three straight Wednesday’s with no Thursday night NRL games scheduled that week.

To increase the chance of recovery for the game’s elite, the NRL are also investigating shifting the 6pm Friday night game to a Sunday afternoon in the week of a State of Origin match.
Due to the complexities of the 2023 season draw, the NRL are unlikely to release the finished product until late November.

I assume they have some idea if they've decided the number of rounds/byes

    But in terms of what could happen;

2006 (15 teams), was a 26 round comp, each week had one bye, except rounds 11 & 17 had three byes each.

Then there's years like 2017 that was also 26 rounds, didn't have the rep round, but each team had 3 byes. It was structured as:
    R12 8 teams with bye
    R13 2 teams with bye
    R15 8 teams with bye
    R16 2 teams with bye
    R18 8 teams with bye
    R19 4 teams with bye

With an odd number of teams and 27 rounds, I'm expecting some sort of hybrid of the two (any chance to use the word hybrid).
Obviously will need to have one team on the bye each round (using 27 of 51 byes), then 3 rounds with 8 additional teams on byes?
    Maybe something like that?
