I did start a team for my 10 year old in round 10 with a few of her favourite players (Walsh, Hynes, Reed Mahoney?) so she has enough trades to jump from cheapy to cheapy each week. Has racked up $1.6m in growth over that time and Metcalf has been value for her (along with Cogger)

I can also estimate that there are about 155k activeish teams because she climbed ranks pretty rapidly and then stalled at that mark for the last three.

Sandon Smith seems to be the popular one.
Coates if you want someone who isn't necessarily going to make you money but will be a certain starter as long as he's fit.
Hands is too much of a risk with Hodgson back any week.
The slightly more expensive option would have been Metcalf.
