Monday Night Footy Empty Monday Night Footy

Post by Pieman Tue Aug 30, 2016 3:01 pm

Can someone tell me why they are getting rid of it?
I hate that they are getting rid of Monday Night Footy. Sometimes just knowing that a game of footy is on later that night gets me through the Monday depression.

Whats the plan now? Thursday and two friday games again?
Wasnt the two friday night games thing a massive failure?

I was always under the impression that the Monday night game was the highest rating besides the friday night and sunday arvo...

Also.... the season is too fucking long IMO.
They need to cut it down to 18 games or something like that.

    Play a shortened season.
    Play state of origin.
    Then play the tests.

    No crowds
    More free to air
9 don't want Monday night game.
More people have Friday off than have Tuesday off.
Thursday people are looking forward to the weekend and will go out
Monday people are thinking fuck my life I have a week of this shit to go and don't go out

Actually quite devastated it's finished up.  Was always nice to have one more game left after Sunday.  Shit crowds as No Worries said a big part of it you'd think.  You'd think Parra would have got a better turn out than that last night as an example with the last game there, regardless of their situation and the opposition.

Footy 5 days a week was pretty unique to our code and loved it.  I'd prefer 2 Friday/3 Sat/2 Sun/1 Mon personally.  But if it's going to be 1 Thur/2 Fri/3 Sat/ 2 Sun I can live with that.

If the second game on a friday is live and not riddled with ad's, I would be ok with it. I loved only having 2 nights without a game on though

As pieman said, whilst the crowds were shit, that won't be the reason for killing it.

The NRL makes very, very few decisions with the aim of increasing crowds in mind, so I don't see why they'll start now.

Basically with the advent of Thursday night football, Monday night's have become too problematic from a scheduling point of view. Playing 5 days of the week just makes it too hard to get a draw together without screwing some teams over with short turnarounds. So they've had to pick Thursday or Monday and gone with the former.

From a selfish point of view, I think Thursday night football screws with fantasy planning. Thursday afternoon is too early to be locking in decisions for the fantasy week. Rolling lockout makes it better, but there are a few things that just stuff you around. More than once this season I've been caught with last week's captain because I've forgotten to change it over before Thursday kickoff.

So the Bermuda game will be back in play next season ?

That 2nd friday game reduces the games on the weekend by one. Who watches that ? Delayed and ad riddled. Not i.

We need to bring back ABC saturday avo footy with Warren Boland. Gees i loved that as a kid, especially as it seemed the sharks had a mortgage on the timeslot.

It doesnt because they are getting rid of the monday night game

Surely they are not bringing back the dreadful second game on a friday

    Good riddance I say.

Monday night footy will now be on at 6pm on a Friday (meaning back to back live games) which is heaps better IMO, particularly given they are retaining the Thurs night footy which meant it was always too short a gap between Monday and Thurs which effectively fucked up the NRL's already shit scheduling.

Basically Fox won't be losing out because they will be swapping MNF with FNF but in regards to one of the earlier points and something I have been saying for a while now is that the TV rights companies should be caring about the crowd numbers as it certainly translates to the viewing experience and it would surely translate to ratings (to what extent is anyone's guess I suppose).

The biggest financial hit caused by Monday/Thursday night football would be to season ticket sales

Its hard to justify cost for a ticket if you are one of the non-Ch9 friendly clubs that gets heaps of shitty timeslots.

Fortunately for me Tigers had a good draw this year, and rounds 20-26 that weren't scheduled at season ticket buying time turned out to be scheduled as good as you could hope for

Well, if they are going to 6pm fridays they certainly do not give a flying fuck about crowd numbers.
Most people in sydney are flat out getting out of work before 6pm let alone getting out at 4pm in order to get to a footy game.
Throw in picking the kids up after school, getting them ready, waiting for the mrs to get ready... not a fucking chance in hell of getting decent crowds at a 6pm game on a friday of all days.

The traffic in brisbane will be fucking atrocious from 3pm onwards if they have 6pm games.

    What a horrible decision.

I don't understand why the Broncos don't get more Sunday arvo games. Best day of the week for it IMO, especially for families as they have plenty of time to get all the kids ready and whatnot (plus they can make a day out of it). Average crowd figures would increase also.

Because they rate on friday nights apparently.

Also, if there is a 6pm game that basically rules anyone out who lives more than an hour or so away.

Means people will have to take half days at work or take the day off - which is a ridiculous expectation

I enjoyed having 5 days of footy because it meant you didn't have a lot of shit footballless days.

Friday at 6 works for me though because I finished work at 4 on Fridays.

One of the few bonuses of being League nuts over in WA is the fact we get the games at decent times.  It's never been that hard for me to watch the 2nd game because it's still a decent hour-regardless if it's always the Broncos and always Hadley.

By the way, is Hadley still on?  Aside form Origin, I have only had to watch 1 Nine game all year  Very Happy

Blokes in pubs and clubs having a beer after work get exposed to Fox. They pull up stumps and want to still watch Fox for the second game when they get home (Fuck ch9, didn't realize how good Fox was), subscribe.
