Some of the games were interesting because they were close, but the overall standard of football was not good.

IMO, over the last few years we've seen a gradually raising of the standard of play in the first couple of rounds.
Teams are fitter, more accurate, with better set completion etc - gone were the days of the first month being a bit of a warming into things month.

At least, that was until this year....
PVL rule changes aside, my theory is that we are seeing the impact of Covid across the preseason.
From my recollections, it sounded like it took most players a couple of weeks to return to full training.

That's 2 weeks when instead of skills-training & physical gains, they are at best maintaining but quite possibly slipping backwards - especially in an aerobic sense.
With a normal preseason every single week counts.

Further, there's probably a bigger disadvantage to players & team structures who had Covid disruptions later in preseason (e.g. February) vs picking it up early (say December/early-January).
By all accounts Penrith, Brisbane, Newcastle?, Titans sound like they got it on the earlier side - the Titans obviously have inexperience issues with their spine, but the other three have started fairly well and look in good condition.

Covid disruptions that occurred later in the preseason are likely also to be more disruptive to team structure training drills, given the disruptions are staggered (you're unlikely to lose the whole squad all at once, so you might seldom have your intended starting 13 training together very much).

PYTM might be able to shed some light on if he saw much disruption? maybe?

What does it mean in terms of Fantasy? - I think some teams might just take a bit longer to get up to NRL speed than others (circa what we might've seen 5 years ago), some of those spines are going to take a bit more time to gel, and some of those gun players are just going to take a bit longer to get into their normal pattern of output.

Is it worth making lots of sideways trades on historical guns? probably not - it may just be better to chill

As with the start of most seasons, you could probably throw a blanket over the top 10k, maybe 20k even - I'd be surprised if anyone really gets away - it's a long season!

Holy moly, I got so baked this week, I am now surrounded by pastry and might have eat my way out of a pie.

630 is my worst score in a non-Origin round since I started playing in 2012 when I picked Nathan Merritt in Week 1 thinking "I've heard of him, he's good" - not knowing he had a toe injury which would keep him out for a couple of months. Ken Sio was my other winger.

I thought I'd learnt how to play since then but sheesh. Small crumbs of comfort - I left 69 possible extra points in the NPRs with M King and and Leo Thompson so could have got to 699. Choosing the best scorer as captain would have got me another 40.

Not that anyone should listen to me but the lower scoring would make me very wary of bringing in Cleary at his price. Unless he really bucks the trend, he will average much lower than his starting price, which will surely tumble after a few rounds.

And apologies to those who picked me in Fantasy Fantasy. The only way is up.

I read Max King had a childhood full of neglect so apparently he changed his name by deed poll to hide his poor upbringing. His prior name was Wayne Kerr.

The caveat I'd put on that is if Cleary is scoring lower and the general scores are lower by the same proportion then Cleary's price won't fall because the magic number will rise?

(I think Cleary's price *will* drop a little, because his stats last year were an absurdity, but it's no guarantee)

Really appreciate the comment, glad people are reading it as it felt self serving to write so much with little feedback

Loved my league for a long long time and fantasy is a great extension- pleased to have this place to discuss the game

I gained 11k rank up to 19k overall so if this trend keeps going I should be first by round 5.

I'm not sure the hard-line (as it were) Christians are even allowed to do that? Lot of pent-up aggression to get out in his short stints.

Need a spreadsheet of fantasy scores to last emission to see if there's any correlation, then an equivalent of NRL Physio or Wackos Whispers (wouldn't even need to change the name) to track who's doing what.
