Few players took as much pride out of Queensland’s win in the opening State of Origin game than Kalyn Ponga. The Newcastle superstar watched the Maroons’ victory at home and savoured Queensland’s performance, in particular the debut of Reece Walsh.
Walsh seemed impervious to the pressure and he can take solace in the knowledge that the Maroons’ No.1 jersey will be his for this year’s series after Ponga reluctantly confirmed that he and Queensland coach Billy agreed it’s best to focus on his club duties for the time being.
Ponga wants to make it very clear that he isn’t turning his back on Origin or the Maroons.
He loves playing for his state and wearing the Queensland jersey.
However, for the moment he believes he needs to concentrate on Newcastle and stringing together some games for the Knights.
It is why he sent Slater a text message earlier this week – well before Queensland’s win in Origin I – wishing him luck and asking that he not be considered for the remainder of the series.
“I watched the game last night and I was really happy for Queensland and really happy for Reece,” Ponga said.
“He had a great debut. I always knew he would. Yes, it is true I have told Billy that I need to focus on Newcastle at the moment.
“I reached out to him earlier in the week to let him know and wish him luck. I love Queensland and the Maroons jersey but I need to play more games and be on the field for Newcastle at the moment.
“It was a really difficult decision to make but I will fight to win back my place in the Queensland side next year.”
Ponga has only played two games since returning from a stint on the sidelines. He was outstanding in the Knights’ win over Manly last weekend, inspiring Newcastle to victory in the second half.

Yeah Talakai/Ramien are interesting prospects, will have to look into the RD17 bye.

I`m looking at Suaalii, maybe it`s false hope but if the roosters start firing he might start firing.

You're looking alright for Rd 17 with just Preston and Bula so far. Hynes if missing origin and Oloapu might be on the radar too though.

I have those 4 and more, so really can't afford to jump on Ramien too. Have a feeling I'll be playing 16 that week if I'm lucky.

I dropped him after 11 rounds for pathetic scoring. At his now lower price, I'd maybe consider him again but a centre would have to go down first.

What were peoples expectations about restings this week?

Aside from the Dolphins trying to get from Adelaide to Auckland by Saturday, was expecting everyone fit to back up from Origin.

Literally zero concerns about Cleary, Haas, Fifita etc. even before confirmation via Twitter.

Comp is too close for any team to have the luxury of resting players IMO. Unless it's the Raiders and Croker lol

I think more likely after Origin 3 if teams like Panthers, Storm get a roll on and look like certainties for the top 4

Yeah I suspect most will back up, though I was a bit worried about Walsh before seeing the Twitter mail.

Really interested to see how Hudson Young plays tonight. He made a bit of a tool of himself, even Johns in commentary was hinting at it without saying it directly. Must know his Blues jumper is gone... but would be a good response to go bonkers tonight.

Been hearing a lot about Young but I thought he did exactly the job he was supposed to. Issue again is probably Fittler's use of the squad - teams don't generally use 31 minute edge players week to week, because it's a terrible idea.

Having said that, Friz was good and Martin was very good off the bench.

Just think NSW have 99 problems and Young ain't one.
