CRONULLA remain hopeful of finalising a contract with troubled Leeds hooker James Segeyaro before the start of the season.
It has been widely speculated Segeyaro has signed with the NRL premiers, however a club source said the deal was far from completed.

The controversial No. 9 and his manager Sam Ayoub have been in talks with Cronulla for the past two months, but they are still yet to reach a settlement.
Leeds are prepared to release Segeyaro to rejoin the NRL despite having two seasons left on his contract, but only if they receive a significant transfer fee even after replacing him with Manly rake Matt Parcell last month.

However, the Sharks are refusing to pay and are confident they can negotiate a compromise with the Rhinos so they can proceed with registering an NRL contract.
This leaves Segeyaro in a precarious position, needing Leeds to back down on the transfer fee for the former North Queensland and Penrith star to return to Australia.

If Segeyaro joins the Sharks he will link with a cast of hookers already signed on the books, including ex-Wests Tiger Manaia Cherrington, Roosters premiership-winner Daniel Mortimer who has finished his stint at the Gold Coast and the promising Brailey brothers, Jayden and Blayke.
Segeyaro would be favoured to start at hooker if can reach a deal with Cronulla.
He has 113 NRL games under his belt and was a proven matchwinner during his stints at the Cowboys and Panthers.

The Rhinos expect the hooker to return to England for pre-season training, insisting they would not be releasing him from his contract.
“We’re expecting him to be back,” Leeds coach Brian McDermott said recently. “We made a commitment to James and he made one to us, so we’re expecting him to return.
“I spoke to him on the phone and he expressed some concerns — which I don’t want to say too much about — in relation to coming back.

“We’ve made an obligation to him and he engaged in an agreement with us and they aren’t to be broken lightly. If he looks you in the eye, says he’ll be back whenever and doesn’t come, that’s a big thing.”
McDermott was particularly upset Segeyaro for making comments about his time with Leeds.
“It’s very disappointing with some of the things he’s said about being here and staring at four walls, which almost leads people to believe he was brought here and shoved into a concrete room and said ‘away you go’,” he said.

“I feel bad for some of our staff, like (head of athletic performance) Jason Davidson and Chris Gibson, who spent an unbelievable amount of time looking after him, taking care of him.
“Jason was practically on speed dial, among other staff, and we were meeting him on days off, taking him for a coffee, having a meal with him — I can’t imagine how much spare time he had at all really.
“I thought he’d have been a pain in the backside for him so to say that is disappointing.”
