is this a genuine possibility or just "talk", like last year? (when bird was talked up as fullback over barba).

if bird got the FB gig he would be straight into my side.

That's the plan. Smith will miss a minimum of 4 games over origin. With Smith it's either get him in round 1 or round 20.

The problem with Holmes is his poor base stats i.e he's lazy & doesn't go looking for the ball. Of course that will have to change if he's f/b as he'll be more involved at f/b instead of cruising on the wing. I think if J. Bird gets the f/b gig he'll be straight into my team.

Is it possible to field a starting 17 just of team captains and co-captains?

Probably doesn't work positionally or within the salary cap.

Think of all the fantasy points that responsibility would get you though.

    The Saga continues........

Cronulla Sharks confident of deal with Leeds Rhinos over James Segeyaro

    MATT LOGUE, The Daily Telegraph
    January 13, 2017 12:38pm

CRONULLA remain hopeful of finalising a contract with troubled Leeds hooker James Segeyaro before the start of the season.

It has been widely speculated Segeyaro has signed with the NRL premiers, however a club source said the deal was far from completed.

    CO-CAPTAINS: Eels announce new leaders

    SUPERCOACH: The best cheapies

The controversial No. 9 and his manager Sam Ayoub have been in talks with Cronulla for the past two months, but they are still yet to reach a settlement.

Leeds are prepared to release Segeyaro to rejoin the NRL despite having two seasons left on his contract, but only if they receive a significant transfer fee even after replacing him with Manly rake Matt Parcell last month.

However, the Sharks are refusing to pay and are confident they can negotiate a compromise with the Rhinos so they can proceed with registering an NRL contract.

This leaves Segeyaro in a precarious position, needing Leeds to back down on the transfer fee for the former North Queensland and Penrith star to return to Australia.

If Segeyaro joins the Sharks he will link with a cast of hookers already signed on the books, including ex-Wests Tiger Manaia Cherrington, Roosters premiership-winner Daniel Mortimer who has finished his stint at the Gold Coast and the promising Brailey brothers, Jayden and Blayke.

Segeyaro would be favoured to start at hooker if can reach a deal with Cronulla.

He has 113 NRL games under his belt and was a proven matchwinner during his stints at the Cowboys and Panthers.

The Rhinos expect the hooker to return to England for pre-season training, insisting they would not be releasing him from his contract.

“We’re expecting him to be back,” Leeds coach Brian McDermott said recently. “We made a commitment to James and he made one to us, so we’re expecting him to return.

“I spoke to him on the phone and he expressed some concerns — which I don’t want to say too much about — in relation to coming back.

Daniel Mortimer puts in the hard yards at Cronulla’s off-season training. Picture: Brett Costello
“We’ve made an obligation to him and he engaged in an agreement with us and they aren’t to be broken lightly. If he looks you in the eye, says he’ll be back whenever and doesn’t come, that’s a big thing.”

McDermott was particularly upset Segeyaro for making comments about his time with Leeds.

“It’s very disappointing with some of the things he’s said about being here and staring at four walls, which almost leads people to believe he was brought here and shoved into a concrete room and said ‘away you go’,” he said.

Former Tigers rake Manaia Cherrington is in the mix for the starting gig. Picture: Jenny Evans
“I feel bad for some of our staff, like (head of athletic performance) Jason Davidson and Chris Gibson, who spent an unbelievable amount of time looking after him, taking care of him.

“Jason was practically on speed dial, among other staff, and we were meeting him on days off, taking him for a coffee, having a meal with him — I can’t imagine how much spare time he had at all really.

“I thought he’d have been a pain in the backside for him so to say that is disappointing.”

Mataora. wasn't he moved to the interchange bench late last year a few times and have his minutes reduced ever so slightly, and with Brown chopping and changing the team after every loss, he is too risky and much better options out there.

I still wish I had him last year though

Mataora started last season on fire (helped by 2 tries in the first 5 weeks)

But don't see any reason why he would significantly improve again on what he did last year

The other thing to remember about Newcastle is they pretty much never played the same forward pack 2 weeks in a row. There are several Knights forwards that are a little tempting. How much inconsistency do you want in your team

what i could never understand is how that could be good for their structures in defense. I appreciate trying new things but when the pack was changing every single week (and edge forwards moving to the middle, middle forwards to the edge, etc) it would be near impossible to develop any consistency with, and confidence in, the man beside you, because it was a different man every week.

i guess that showed in some of the scorelines.

I think a lot of the changes last year had to do with them not wanting to totally destroy some players confidence. Let them bounce around between first grade floggings and getting a few wins in reserve grade.

I think the Knights surprise a lot of people this year, i like how their forwards are shaping up. Its a pity Mullen cant stay of the field because they actually looked ok last year with him and hodgo on the field at the same time.

    You underestimate SJs consistency.

Started last year at $477k, cheapest you could pick him up for was $422k. Conveniently that was just before origin, but would you bet on the same good timing happening again.
In previous years the main reason SJ has become highly owned for the run home is that he's had a single bad injury effected score that has killed his price. In general his scores are no more volatile than any half.

In practise though, it doesn't matter too much if SJ doesn't drop a large amount, because its likely that some gun will.

Thurston and Hunt both lost more than SJ did. DCE lost about the same.

All it takes is for some gun player to get injured in the first 5 minutes, pump out a single figure score and then insta-affordability. Just wait until cash out time and pick up whoever is ripe for the plucking, whether that is SJ or someone else.

I'd be interested to know how much SJ drops prior to origin time over the last 3 years? I never start with SJ and always have him after origin (past 3 years), I seem to recall that I get him heavily discounted.

When you say "In practise though, it doesn't matter too much if SJ doesn't drop a large amount, because its likely that some gun will" - Is the very reason I hate starting with 3 "guns" in the halves - severely limits your moves as the year goes on - I hope that 2 cows show up prior to kick off!
