Last year I didn't really plan for byes. Didn't trade out any keepers over the bye round, due to low trades and not 100% sure I would leave enough money to get them back in. I held teddy, JDB through injuries. But what got me up to 24th was whilst everyone was focusing on the big byes 12,15 and 18th I made sure I had gun 17s for all the other rounds, making up what I lost in the other ones. And my gun back five. I started with Croker, picked up BJ in about round 5 and then picked up mansour and rapana after origin. All these guys averaged between 50-60 to finish the year from memory. It was the Joseph, jarrod, Jordan, josh show

Johnny B Goode wrote:I'll say this about the bye rounds, you can truly get right up there at the top if you plan well enough for them. In 2015 I went bye round crazy and I got as high as 85 in overall during a very competitive time of the year. I finished in the top 400 at the end of the year AND I never once owned RTS or Cam Smith AND I carried James Maloney as a 3rd half all year.

However it all came crashing down when I ran out of trades and by years end I literally had to make do with Jake Marketo and Nathan Ross as part of my scoring 17 because I literally had nobody else left. I'd spent so much time buying mid-rangers like Tom Burgess and Alex Johnston for the byes who I then had to sell again.

This year I've really not gone to too much effort to plan for them because I've seen what a pointless endeavour it can be. I'll look to make a few trades to strengthen my team over those rounds but my objective for Fantasy is and always will be to rank as high as I possibly can using as many POD's as I can. I mean I already hardly get excited for RTS doing anything because everyone else rides his scores with you.

I try to avoid buying mid rangers just for byes because I've been burnt before. At this stage I'm looking at some sideways trades (Whitehead to JDB for example) after players stop being useful for byes. This keeps the 17 strong as they are players I would be happy with in the final 17

My best finish of 14th came from attacking byes that others were ignoring. That year there were no real bye friendly guns playing the final bye round so most had 12-13 players. I ran out a full gun 17 and rode them most of the way home. That was the year Gurgess kept scoring tries and most traded him out before byes when he peaked. I held him and he was a great POD giving me a 100 odd as captain at one point. Used my last trade on Ferguson before he decided to drink breezers on the roof and the rest is history. Fergo was in red hot form and I would have gone very close if he didn't get suspended the last 4 weeks leaving me with 16 players. I still hate that bastard

It's a fine line i reckon, and depending on where you sit before the byes start obviously affects how much u could slide or rise. A few misfiring guns that were brought in specifically for the byes and an injury can stifle any prethought plans. I'm hoping i can maintain my possy right through so i dont lose any momentum and/or positive feeling. I checked the points overall and i am only 233 points off first. If this blows out i will feel like any chance of a 'run' is gone.
I think i am going to stay away from Tolman as well, shifting McGuire and/or Smith and bringin in Norman/Browne and an undecided Hooker switch will be the focus.

    Here's hoping.

I agree it is a fine line. If you use your trades & attack the bye rounds you could make ground but with less trades from round 20 you're hoping for minimal injuries & last year for example there were plenty of them. If you save more trades then from round 20 yes you're covered for potential injuries but you run the risk of losing ground as by round 20 there are less pod's as everyone basically have the same players.

Currently I will have these players:
    Round 12 = 16
    Round 13 = 19
    Round 15 = 13 - will use 2 trades to get 15
    Round 16 = 15 - will use 2 trades to get 17
    Round 18 = 13 - will use 2 trades to get 15
    Round 19 = 15 - will use 2 trades to get 15

This will leave me with 7 trades fro round 20.

I'm currently 334 points off first & I think my player numbers for the bye rounds are are good so with 7 trades left from round 20 I should be in reasonable shape.

I think I tried to bye plan last year but ended up injuries and I think suspensions threw most of what I was planning on out the window. I still want to obviously try and focus on it and hope for the best.

I lot of bye planning comes down to luck also.

My bye planning already had a few set backs...
I brought in CWalker a couple rounds back and his scores have been below par
I also brought in Pritchard last round which also gave me a low score
I've had James Graham since the start, paid full price, but in a couple rounds he's available at a discount

... There's is a bit of luck involved

Hopefully my fantasy players will survive the rep round

I once made up a plan like this. The instant one player gets suspended or injured, everything just goes out the window and your team collapses like the Knights in the 2nd half.

This is the one year i'm actually bye and trade planning. Currently in the 5000s with 23 trades left, if I don't make it to the top 1000 by the end of byes and have more than 5 trades left then I'm not trying this hard again.

This is pretty much what my bye planning looks like for the first round. I'm weary of making trades prematurely as I've been burned by that before but may need more than 3 so we'll see.

Fifita to Nathan Brown. Hopefully free some cash and get a player who will play all the way to 16 while Fifi misses a few.

Burns to John Folau. Will make me a nice 10k lol. Waste of a trade? Maybe but if Jennings plays Origin then I'll take the 60 extra points or so.

Maybe Slater to Cody Walker. Problem there is having the cash to do it. Hopefuly they can bridge the gap a little closer in the next 2 weeks. Or maybe Slater to Aubo if he gets a starting spot back.

Also considering JWal to James Graham. Wallace won't miss much time out but assuming he plays Origin then might be worth a shout if Graham drops enough cash. Getting Sione out may also be a goer, worried for his scores and worried for his health in general too. Either way I don't think he can stay

I agree. Plans never work out & even 1 injury to your current players can set you back but as long as you have 5-10 trades left by round 20 at least you can give it a good shot at the end.

Hey guys, I'm in a dilemma over which trades would be be best for the next round so thought I'd ask for some advice.

I have the cash to go Lamb to SJ, it would leave me with 53k itb but not enough to bring in both Munster and Cody Walker the following week which I was planning to do without making a downgrade elsewhere.

Or I could bring in Munster for Ponga and Walker for Lamb this week leaving me 35k itb which will leave enough to go McGuire to Brown next week.

Or I could go one of Munster or Walker this week with CHN to Whitehead or McGuire to Brown for the byes or just stop stuffing about and bring in an elite season keeper like Mannering for McGuire?

Or I could upgrade my centres? I'm quite happy running them as they are for the time being as I dont want to waste too much cash on this position.

I wont be changing my team too much over the byes as I dont devote enough time to fantasy to consider myself a true contender, I wont be trading players in and then trading them out after the byes.. I'm currently ranked 34th and expect to drop a fair bit over the byes but with a bit of luck I may be able to come home strong like I did in 2015.

My team after the C.Walker trade this week leaving me with 20 trades and 78k itb.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts on your trades. I would wait until round 12 before trading Fifita out just in case he isn't selected for origin. Burns to Folau is a waste of a trade & I would wait until round 12 re Folau as he might not even play. Cody Walker is scoring crap atm & Slater is scoring well. I'd wait until round 12 & then if Walker's form has picked up then get him or as you said if Aubusson has reclaimed his starting spot. Then just make a choice between Walker or Aubusson. I'm keeping Wallace myself but if he plays origin then he's an easy sell to J. Graham.
