Yes, its a genuine part of the strategy.
It relies on not having any shittos in your NPR, because if Cleary is your captain, his score gets replaced by the lowest positive score in your 18-25.
(Potentially) no point getting Haas's score doubled if you get a 12 as AE instead of 40 something from whoever would have been 17th man instead of Cleary.
If your VC goes completely nuts (150 or something) then its probably worth it, but if they get around 100, there's generally as much chance of losing points as gaining them
To do it properly, you assemble a team of 18 genuine scorers and the rest guaranteed red dots, so you can be comfortable you don't lose much by taking an AE, but there is much risk involved there.
It works much better in Sportsdeck A-League, where AEs only replace like for like position, so you can force who your AE is to some degree and there is opportunity for fairly risk free loopholing (especially as the 11 team comp means there is always a team on the bye for potential looping)
