Interesting the difference between this rule and the one where a player in front of the play the ball can't get involved in the play. I would have thought this rule makes slightly more sense (and easier to enforce) for players to be able to participate, provided they are behind the play the ball, when the ball is played rather than when it is kicked. If a ball is passed back from dummy half to a kicker, we're not talking about a huge time advantage.
I believe the rule was brought in because some forwards were taking the absolute piss and were standing in the opponent's defensive line (when the 10m rule was brought in for simple offside play).
I remember as a fan being like wtf?
Players are still gonna game it though and stand in line with the play-the-ball, and then take off running as soon as it's played. Dummy-half receives, passes to the kicker, kicker sets themself and kicks.. still a decent amount of time compared to having to wait until the ball actually goes past them.

Yeah but you know gambling mate. Even if Panthers are 75%, anything can happen on the day. I expected Panthers to put up a real fight in last year's grand final, but they looked really off their game. Nerves? Inexperience? Just a bad day?
They aren't unbeatable and Rabbitohs certainly have a team capable of beating them or anyone.
