Saw The Martian today - Excellent, I'd give it an easy 8.5 [after watching San Andreas last night I'm struggling not to give it a 10 - God that movie was awful].

I especially liked how they eliminated virtually all of the contrived emotional nonsense that usually fills films of this ilk - no wasted scenes of distraught family members back on Earth for this flick. Smile

I also liked that I didn't have to spend half the movie rolling my eyes at clearly absurd situations, and although I haven't seen any REAL astronauts debunking of this yet [ala Gravity], it all seemed quite plausible to me [apart from one innocuous scene at the end].

And that's the thing with a lot of Sci-Fi's that want to be plausible based on current or near future technology. There is always that unbelieveable shit that happens. My favourite genre regardless. Without researching it, Gravity didn't seem too far fetched. Interstellar was very believable for 90% of the movie but then they just went that little bit too far.

I was looking forward to The Martian, but the previews I saw last week when at The Scorch Trials kind of put me off. Althought thinking about it now they shouldn't have, because as you say they weren't all Hollywood formulaic.

Definitely will check it out then. Yeah I like all of Neill Blomkamp;s movies. I think District 9 is still my favourite but Chappie was alright. I would go see it if I was you

Shocked  Can't believe you haven't seen any of them!  The second is the must see I guess; it's the one actually called Aliens.

Went and saw it tonight, yeah, pretty good. Certainly built up throughout the course of the movie. Which scene do you mean-when he split his suit? I thought the fact he got out of his seat and was poking his head through the top was a bit stupid-wouldn't that affect his trajectory?

I like the Prometheus tie-in. I also like the fact they don't confirm a lot of the crossover, but let fans draw their own conclusions. Nice.

Thought Martian was brilliant, love this type of film, reignites that thought process of what would you do yourself in that situation and what would you be thinking at the time.

The only thing that i thought should not have been in the movie was the piercing of the suit and squirting around space like a birthday balloon, silly.

If you dont mind a slow burner, one that is very good and has some great survival/instinct elements make sure you watch BackCountry, very good film.
