I loved Risk as a kid, but it suffers from some of the same problems of monopoly. Someone can get an early lead, but then the game can drag on for ages as they slowly grind out a victory.
Also, in multi player games someone can get knocked out completely early, and then have to sit around with nothing to do whilst everyone else plays the game.
More modern games are much better designed and a lot more fun.

Agricola (probably the game our group plays the most) is about building a farm. The setting is not always that important for a good game
