for reference my team is currently:

    Hodgson
    Taupau Napa
    J Trbo L Fitz Gillet
    DCE Morgan
    Bird Lomax
    Gutho Kahu Walker

    B Smith
    Mcguire
    B Elliot
    C Allan

    R Hunt
    Harris-Tavita
    Flegler
    Kerr

Its funny, this is quite a template team for everywhere else with lots of high % players. We have group-think blinkers on in here.

Missing Keighran (replace Harris-Tavita) and Dylan Brown, both are must have to start the season, going to score a lot more than Flegler and Kerr.
We had roughly 150 Fanatics in our Official Leagues last year. 12 of those finished in the Top 100. 7 in the Top 50. 2 were Top 10.

Agree there can be group think blinkers, but there is also a lot of Fantasy experience and footy smarts as well.

Every year i feel like FOMO makes me buy up every potential cow named in the rd1 teams and probably even some that aren't. So rather than asking who everyone is getting, who are cheapies (or other popular picks) people are deliberately not picking and why?

Hard to make a strong case against any of the legit cheapies (eg 212k players) if they are named to start.

Lomax, Keighran, D Brown, Xerri, Garrick, Nikora, Shaggy all have decent reasons for being picked. Job security is probably the biggest concern, but hardest to judge.

EDIT: i guess this doesnt answer the question.

Of the ones I listed, obviously Lomax and Shaggy are fighting for one spot. I'll have at least 5, but probably all six, if they're all named. Garrick and whoever gets the Dragons spot would be the lowest priority in my mind.

    Great question

My picks of the cheaper players I can't justify adding in my team, as there are better options available:
Carty - would need to see minutes, form, job security and the ability to tackle before playing him
Bird - much better options available at CTR either side of his price point that will outperform him.
Lomax - over-hyped, may not even get a spot with Ravalawa's form in the first trial
Any bench forward that is likely to get 30 minutes or less, the points upside just isn't there - Haas (suspended), Kerr, Flegler, Dillon, Burr etc
Allan - seems over-hyped, will be better options at the same price. ISP average of just 32 at fullback
Garrick - average just 35 in ISP, better options at CTR like Nikora who averaged 44 in ISP (including an 8 min game)
Salmon - scored 22, 23 and 36 in his 3 80 minute games in NRL last season
Elliott - even if named at FLB round 1 for turbo, his 3 scores in 80 minutes in NRL have been 2, 11, 13
French - even if he got a spot round 1, averaged 16 last season
    Abbey - French 2.0
Kahu - French 3.0 - average of 19 last season

Planning to keep $200k to upgrade any poor performing cheapies to those that are gunning it in the first couple of rounds.

Adam Blair is a late withdrawal from the trial with Lachlan Burr moving to lock and IPap onto the edge

Likely still behind in the pecking order but at least is first to move into the starting team. With his performance in the last trial hopefully he grabs a bench spot at the least

Burr is looking like Sao last season, loses his spot when all players are available.

I like the guy. Wish he was good (brown*) enough to squeeze Kata out. I think he has a kiwi partner and kids here.

*Warriors seem to play brown talentless players over slightly better players.. Kata is trash but still starts over Ayshford lol

Matt Eisenhuth starts at lock — the latter moving in to the run-on side in place of Elijah Taylor, who sits out with a minor pec injury.

Tohu and Keighran appear to be left and Green and Papalii right. The halves appear to roam in attack.

See the thing is i often think if they are cheap and getting minutes so ofc i should start with them in the squad and "just trade out whichever don't fire". But then your cash isn't the only limit in the game, the number of slots and trades you have are also worth considering. Often enough someone appears who is a must get and then there is also an injury or a massive flop on a more expensive player etc and so on until i end up with LG in my team for half the bloody season.
Also thanks @mattnz, great list and detail.
