Flu shot is not a vaccine for Covid and
Other than a placebo for the mindset of the masses, and towing the governments rhetoric in order to get them on board it does nothing.
    From the government's own website
"While the vaccine won't protect you against COVID-19, it will reduce your risk of influenza — which kills hundreds of people every year and leads to thousands more hospitalisation"
"Australians are being urged to get their flu vaccination as soon as possible — to reduce the risk of a dangerous double-up of seasonal influenza and coronavirus (COVID-19)."
It's about the load on hospitals nothing else.
Every year players get flu shots and every year players refuse.

    **Rant over**

Every year the flu shot is based on estimations/forecasts of what strains of influenza they think will be most prevalent over the next 12 months.
Sometimes its more accurate than others. It is never going to be perfect.

The reason why THIS YEAR IS IMPORTANT for the flu shot is that with COVID, we are seeing far more people in hospitals and on ventilators than we normally would.

ANYTHING we can do to reduce the number of people in need of those facilities, we should be doing. This includes getting a flu shot so there's less chance of you, yourself getting influenza and also passing it on to anyone who is immuno-compromised.

I don't like how at the moment everyone who doesn't get the flu vaccine is suddenly an anti-vaxxer. My children, and even myself are otherwise fully vaccinated. I just don't get a flu shot each year. I don't see the point in getting a vaccine that won't stop me getting the flu but it'll make it gentler if I do get it.

And yep, I hate needles too.

I should add to this that whilst I don't get the flu shot myself, if my job depended on me having it, I'd have no issue getting it.

And that's why I don't have a strong opinion on this thing either way.

This year was the first in a long time I didn't get the flu shot. If my job made me I would however, but it made me really sick last year so just didn't do it this year. We'll see soon if I'm an idiot lol.

While ANYTHING in capitals was a compelling argument
put in context the NRL should stand down players because they could potentially put a strain on the health care system ?

Players who decline to be vaccinated will be allowed to continue to play as long as they sign a revised waiver form. Full story on @aus_sport .

I'd be interested to see stats on how many 20-30yo fit young men fill hospital wards because they have the flu.

A question not really for this forum but it's been on my mind a lot today. So if you get a flu shot you can still get the flu; it's just a milder version of it. Even if you have a mild version of the flu, can you still pass it on anyway?

Yeah I have a lot of time for him. Scores amazing off the bench as it is, if starting lock he’ll go in for me priced at 50. Figured about 10pts priced under if can get the minutes

    Correct.

The flu shot does nothing for a common cold
It will do even less for coronavirus
The “dangerous double up” is an unfounded myth

I think the flu shot for elderly to cover the season’s main strains is very sensible.
Anyone under 65, and/or fit and healthy, optional and your choice frankly.

Anti-vaxxers in general though... utter imbeciles

Yep, I completely agree, and I don't like that at the moment we're all being thrown into the same category.

There is a massive difference between an anti-vaxxer and someone who just chooses not to get a flu shot.

There is record low numbers (by a very large degree) of people with the flu so far this year because of this social distancing.

    Bit off topic guys

What’s lockdown phase are you guys on in NZ and AUS

I’m interested in the return of community sports, hasn’t been released yet in Wales but seen the phased returns for NZ and Ireland, I’ve heard rumours the WRU are making some potentially shitty changes like the re introduction of ‘tag rugby’ for when the season resumes for u9-12s which I Hope is not the case!

The phased returns I’ve seen in the NZ and Ireland model look like a decent compromise to at least getting some mini rugby back up and running! I don’t mind not working and being at home but I’m really starting to miss the junior rugby, it’s our age groups year for district honours in the new season and I’m praying it doesn’t get too badly effected

I haven't actually heard anything about community sports here (QLD), though tbh I haven't been following closely of late.

Some kids are back to school this week, and all grades are going back in two weeks time. they are looking at opening cafes/restaurants (for sit down meals etc) around the start of June. I would assume pubs and bars may be included in that with restrictions on numbers? Not sure.

We have next to no new cases on a daily basis here, doesn't appear as though it ever really got into the community.

Absolutely miles ahead of us then even though you should be behind, shows how much our government has fucked it up! I’ve seen in NZ that phase 2 which I believe they are just about to enter that training resumes with socially distancing and measures etc and only and Would only be a few weeks off moving to phase 1 which is full rugby returning

They are talking about no scrums or tackling over here....for the full season!!!

In NZ, we have come out of full lockdown (stage 4), and expected to go down to stage 2 next week. Getting really low case numbers here 0-2 new cases per day.

Stage 2 will see most cafes and bars able to operate, max gathering size of 100 people and ability to travel between regions.

For the most part people took it pretty seriously here early on, even before official lockdowns. We are lucky in general in that we have a lower density population in most areas, people can stay at home and still have a yard/etc to keep their sanity.

I think a large percentage of our cases were linked with overseas travel and it never really took off in the community.

50 active cases in QLD now and only 8 of those are in hospital (3 ICU).
