I bet the Tigers will be looking forward to playing Tedesco in round 1 so they can smash him & knock him the phuck out. That'll teach him for deserting the boys. Mind you they have to catch him first.

Remember last season? No-body knew and there was a lot of discussion  on it!

There were two camps here that were posting:

    1) saying don't trade out Smith as he would play/wouldnt get rested or play reduced minutes, generally citing previous seasons as their rationale and

    2) saying it was worth trading Smith out cause this time might be different, but actually their main rationale was based on running the numbers simply based on the time he would miss through byes and origin regardless of any additional time he may or may not get off.

In the context of the discussion you are having though, it doesn't really matter who was right or wrong last season because the reality is at that time no-one knew if Smith was going to get any additional rest or not. Gonna be hard to tell this time as well one would think, until its too late.

Yeah exactly what I'm saying you need to make a decision before the first bye how many games you would be happy to carry him for, and then make your best educated guess on how many he will actually miss. I won't have that problem though because I'm most likely going Smithless.

He's on my bench and I think I'm definitely going to stick with him. If he goes well I think he can definitely keep his starting spot.

I hadn't really considered Friend as a Smith alternative - but it doesn't look that bad an option:

    Friend,
    Fifita, Lodge
Merrin, Whitehead, McQueen (or Rochow, or Griffin - pending TL)
    Croft, Cartwright
    Mitchell, Taka
    Teddy, Ponga, Thompson

Cook, Liu, RFM, (Croker/Kikau/Katoa/Leilua/Nicholls/Kennar/Isaako etc - 5 of pending TL)

While I would have Thompson in my squad I wouldn't play him in round 1. I think just play the fixtures for the cheapies. Kennar has the Warriors & he should score the best out of Thompson, Katoa & Isaako.

Bateman, Whitehead, Soliola, Tapine all played lock for the Raiders

I think when Lussick comes back in round 2-3 then AFB will go back to the bench for his impact when the opposition is tiring.

None of the 2018 Tigers were even at the club last year.

Yeah, he definitely is that sort of player. Lussick will get injured again though haha. Hopefully though he can get some more minutes.

just noticed Afoa playing 75+ minutes at 2nd row averages 42 (priced at 33.7). 0.5% ownership. Another one to consider?

Smith will potentially average more this season than ever before. Without Cronk doing the bulk of the kicking, Smith will pick up some of the slack. Croft will probably average the most kick metres but Smith will definitely average more this season than last.

But that's impossible to predict. If your criteria for trading him out is if he misses three games, you won't know about it until after he has already missed the first one. And once he has missed the first one you missed the trade out boat because he then only misses two more, which by your criteria warrants holding him. It doesn't work.

    Difficult, but not impossible.
There was some warning before last year that Smith would get a rest.

Difference last year was that, if you ignore getting rested and injured, Smith was still going to be down 4 games due to origin and byes. Some players woudl only miss 2 (and if those 2 were minor bye rounds then it could be easily covered)

This year everyone misses 1 or 2 bye rounds. Nobody plays both and origin players only miss 1 extra game.

If you have a non Smith hooker are you going to
    a) swap him to a different hooker after 1st bye and then stick with the new hooker all year?
    b) swap him to a new hooker for 1 bye and bring him back in afterwards.
    c) hold him anyway and b down a player in 1 of the byes

None of those situations are much different to just holding Smith through all byes (assuming he misses just the 2 games)
