I used to watch a lot of the Super Rugby games, but it got so bad that I haven't watched a game in years. What always stood out to me is the way the players spoke to the refs. There was so much respect, which hasn't been seen in league since the 80's.
Yes, I agree that it was a terrible game to watch, but I applaud the refs for clamping down on the back chat and actually enforcing the rules.
If they stick it out, the players will eventually learn, or get dropped to reserve grade.

Good on Bellamy and Smith for putting the onus on their team in the press conference

I have no issue with the refs doing their job and blowing the penalities, as yes, it's up to the players to do the right thing within the rules, but one aspect that is a tad frustrating is that the refs haven't been doing it up until this point. They've let play the balls and offside players time and time again for years, and now all of a sudden, they decide to crack down and expect no backlash at all? I know it's either a free for all, or they blow every single one like they are but nevertheless, it's still frustrating, but the players will just need to what they need to do, as there is no middle ground in this.

It's like the boss who's a bit of a clown and loves a drink and a laugh and lets the staff cruise a bit and get away with slacking off now and then, and then all of a sudden he decides to pull his head in and try and be a boss again, it's not that easy unfortunately, but he is the boss and you have to fall into line.

You expect me to watch that again ?

The last 5 was its own thing, the Storm or moreso a particular couple of players imploding. Perhaps as a result of the penalties or perhaps not totally. Chambers set it off, he's largely to blame for the melee or handbag sale at the death.
Gotta remember to, the game has been how it is for a long time.. years. So thats week after week, match after match.. all week at training for years. Any change they want to bring in isnt going to happen overnight.

And i may have said it a few times, but I'll never lay down in defense of guys who cop a dud wrap. You've got Chambers choking gallen on the ground for over 5 seconds, gallens almost purple in the face. Afterwards Chambers cant even concede he may have been a little to into it, mouthing off at gallen in the next set away from play. And after the scrap with NAS and Gallen and every other 2nd player Gallen clearly persists to shake NAS's hand but he point blank refuses.

Smith was binned because he was penalised, then penalised again straight away for backchat, and responded to that penalty with more backchat.

Did someone in the previous game argue with a backchat penalty?

I only got to watch about half the first game in bits and pieces on my phone at work. Which bits were worse in the first game? What I saw tonight was a bloke (who I love as a Queenslander) sent to the bin as an example to every other player and Coach in the game. It has to start somewhere and why not there? Why not the bloke who everyone jokes about being the most powerful referee in the game?

If they still don't take note then maybe they do start sending multiple people off. We can all just hope they learn before that happens. If it does happen, it's still the players and Coaches ruining the game, not the refs.

Mate, this is the whole point. The NRL have been cracking down on things for years and then going soft a week or two later. This time they have kept it going. It's not all of a sudden, they have been having crackdowns for years, it's just this time it is sustained.

I think i'll trade out Smith. Hes carrying some sort of injury. Not kicking or running and staying out of play in general.

Now it'll be for a half. I don't know whether it should be SJ, DCE or Mathieson (manly cause it'll be a big cash grab)

Fair enough. I guess that's worse than multiple off side penalties from a team defending their line.

But it has been a while i guess, since we copped 44-4 floggings.
